Often called a "hoot owl," a barred owl can be identified by its characteristic hoo-hoo-to-hoo, hoo-hoo-to-hoo-aww, in the rhythm of "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all." The horizontal bars on the throat and upper breast, and the vertical streaks on the belly give this owl its name.
