Roseate Spoonbill

Algemene Informatie

Although pink, they are not flamingos. Like the flamingo, the roseate spoonbill's pink color comes from the food it eats. In the wild, spoonbills eat a lot of crustaceans that feed on algae which are high in carotenoids. These pigments keep the spoonsbills in the pink! At ZooAmerica, the spoonbills are fed a commercial flamingo diet, high in the vitamins and minerals that keep them healthy and colorful. Spoonbills are wading birds. They use "tactile location," which means keeping their sensitive bills slightly open as they wave them back and forth through the water. When they hit food, the bill snaps shut.
