Rex

General Information

Welcoming visitors to the San Diego Zoo, a majestic bronze sculpture celebrates Rex, the lion that inspired Dr. Harry Wegeforth to found the Zoo in 1916. Over 27 feet tall, the sculpture-called Rex's Roar-Weighs 20,000 pounds and is made of 250 pieces of bronze welded together. Balanced on a single paw, Rex is as much a feat of engineering as a work of art. Invoking the can-do spirit and dedication of our wildlife alliance! Wegeforth, Rex symbolizes our commitment to protecting wildlife and preventing extinction worldwide. We are so happy to welcome Rex back to the Zoo after 100 years and hope you will stop for a quick photo next time you visit.
