Maned Wolf

General Information

It's not a wolf! Maned wolves are an ancient species that survived the Pleistocene extinction. They are known from fossils that are more than 4 million years old. Like foxes, jackals, dogs, and wolves, they are canids, but they are unique. Unlike the others, which live in packs, the maned wolf is solitary. It hunts alone and even mated pairs communicate with each other mostly by smell, and not face to face.
