Bontebok

General Information

In a list of the most recognized animals in Africa, the bontebok is unlikely to make the cut—most people have never heard of it. The bontebok is one of the rarest antelope species in South Africa, wandering across the coastal grass plains dining on low-growing vegetation. Their appearance differs dramatically from other antelope: a rich brown coat with a purplish, iridescent luster, extraordinary white face, tail, and belly, and white feet that resemble socks. The white markings on the long, narrow face are known as a threat mask, resembling a medieval knight’s helmet, intended to intimidate predators. The horns are visible in both sexes. They are angular and ringed, growing up to 18 inches in length in males.
