Africa Rocks Woodland Aviary

General Information

Here you can find over a dozen brightly colored bird species native to the African woodlands including the splendid sunbird, black-headed weaver, and many more! Gregarious and flamboyant, bee-eaters are one of the unique species you'll find here. They are fast and fierce when it comes to securing a meal. Aptly named, these birds fearlessly pluck bees (and other flying insects) out of the air with their strong, downward curved beak, smack the prey on a branch to stun it, rub its rump on a surface to remove the stinger, and flush out the toxins, and then chow down. Most bee-eater species are found in Africa and Asia, with some in southern Europe, Australia, and New Guinea.
