Red Panda

General Information

Many people admire the red panda for its charming, kitten-like face, cinnamon red fur, fluffy ringed tail, and astonishing agility. Red pandas are only found in small, isolated mountain territories above 4,000 feet in China, Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Burma. The red panda was actually classified in 1825, 48 years before the black-and-white bears. At first, the two species were thought to be related, but now we know that giant pandas are bears and red pandas are in their own unique family. Red pandas eat mainly bamboo, along with some insects, and they are well adapted to their arboreal lifestyle, spending most of their time in trees. Their thick fur helps protect them from rain showers in their mountain rain forest habitat.
