Fynbos

General Information

A unique region of coastal southern Africa is known as the fynbos (FIN-bose)—an Afrikaans word meaning "fine bush"—due to its diminutive plant life. Even though Fynbos covers only about 6.7% of South Africa, it has the largest number of plant species of any biome in the country, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Trees are few and far between, but proteas like the giant orange nodding pincushion stand tall in this elfin forest. When you first look across an expanse of fynbos, you may not at first be impressed by the collection of low scrubby plants and a few bushes. But when you look a bit closer you will see the sheer diversity of these numerous species found nowhere else in the world.
