Mexican Beaded Lizard

General Information

Mexican beaded lizards and Gila monsters are the only venomous lizards in the entire world and share many characteristics. The scientific name, Heloderma horridum, of the beaded lizard contributes to the folklore and myth surrounding this venomous lizard. The genus name, Heloderma, means "studded skin" and the species name, horridum, means "horrible." This translates to horrible studded skin lizard!
