Black Bear

General Information

Compared to the mother's weight of 125-300 pounds, a newborn cub is quite small. At birth, black bear cubs are the smallest in proportion to their mother's size of any mammal, measuring in at less than ten inches long and only weighing about 12 ounces! Black bears walk with the soles and heels of their feet flat on the ground. This is ideal for moving over rough or hilly ground. Although they usually move on all fours, they can walk on their hind legs for short distances.
