Desert Tortoise

General Information

A desert tortoise spends 95 percent of its life in a burrow. A tortoise uses multiple burrows, but a different one for each season. In the hottest and driest part of the summer, a desert tortoise estivates by retreating into its cooler burrow and remaining inactive. During winter, a tortoise hibernates to avoid the colder temperatures above ground.
