Penguin Bay

General Information

Our colony of Humboldt Penguins can be found in Penguin Bay. This vulnerable South American species thoroughly enjoys basking in the sunshine on hot days. Our colony is currently going through an annual malt where they lose their old feathers and replace them with new ones, so sometimes they can look a bit scruffy! They get their name from the Humboldt current that runs along the west coast of South America from Chile to Peru. Their diet consists of fish, their particular favourites are herring, smelt, sardines and anchovies. All our penguins have coloured arm bands on so our zoo team can tell who is who, keep an eye out for our eldest penguin, Chira who is 26 years old, she has the pink band.
