Scimitar Horned Oryx

General Information

Our Scimitar Horned Oryx can be found in Wanyama Village & Reserve. This species was once classed as Extinct in the Wild, but with the help of worldwide zoo breeding programmes, which Chessington is part of, a herd has been reintroduced to northern Africa. Their horns are made of keratin, which is the same material as our fingernails and hair! It's believed that the myth of the unicorn may of come from a sighting of an oryx with one horn. The end of their tongues are black to protect them from sunburn and they can go up to 10 days without drinking water due to their specially adapted kidneys!
