Chessington Zoo always had a good collection of bears –Jack and Jill, two Polar Bears lived in Chessington during the war, however, a doodlebug exploded in a tree above Jack’s cage. He was blown against the side of the cage by the blast and lay silent for days, but amazingly recovered. 2 other notable bears that once lived here were Bonnie & Clyde; Polar Bears who came from Karlsruhe in Germany. They lived in this location until 1991 when they left Chessington, this marked the end of Polar Bears at Chessington since 1931. The area was refurbished, and the underwater viewing area of their enclosure became Creepy Caves.
