Pink-backed Pelicans are mainly a grey/white colour apart from their breast and abdomen where their plumage is pink - this is where they get their name. In the wild, they can be found across Africa on the coast and near fresh water and their diet consists of; fish, a variety of small invertebrates and amphibians. Pink-backed Pelicans can live up to 30 years and have a wingspan of up to 8ft! They cannot sweat, so when they get hot they cool themselves by fluttering air over their moist skin on the inside of their throat pouches - these pouches can hold up to 8 litres of water at one time!
