Cottonmouth

The cottonmouth is also known as a water moccasin. Although venomous, the cottonmouth is not a rattlesnake. This is the only venomous semi-aquatic snake found in North America. When on land, they often position their heads at a 45-degree angle. Cottonmouths are found in many freshwater habitats throughout the southeastern United States. They range as far north as Virginia. Contrary to popular belief, they are not found in Pennsylvania.
