Western Lowland Gorilla

Allgemeine Informationen

Very endangered in its forest habitat in Central Africa, gorillas are the largest apes and live in groups dominated by a silverback - a mature alpha male with silver-grey hair on its back; our silverback is called Damisi. Being a herbivore, the Western Lowland Gorilla eats leaves, fruit, bark, shoots and vegetables. This is the smallest of the gorilla subspecies. In the wild they can live up to 40 years old, in captivity they can live into their 50s. We have a family troop here at Chessington - have a look at the signage down at the enclosure to see who is who! Our gorillas have access to indoor spaces as well as their outside exhibit, so if they're not out when you visit, either wait a little while or pop back later in the day.
