The Burnt Stubb Mansion was built in 1348 as Chessington Lodge – over the years it has been damaged by multiple fires and bombs but has been reconditioned every time. A total of 54 bombs were dropped on the grounds at Chessington during the World Wars. It get’s its name from when it was set on fire during the Civil War and was ‘burnt to a stub’ – when it was restored in 1660, it was named Burnt Stubb Mansion. It has had many uses over the years, from a home, a school, an alehouse to a banquet hall, it’s now used as an attraction for guests and also offices for resort staff.
